Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Thursday inaugurated the commemoration marking 150 years of India’s national song, “Vande Mataram,” describing it as a symbol of unity and patriotism that inspired generations during India’s struggle for freedom.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony in Delhi, Shekhawat said, “A song which played a role in uniting the people to free the country from the shackles of slavery, to make the country independent. That tune of Vande Mataram became the collective mantra of our country's freedom movement.”

He noted that the celebration aims to honour the timeless message of Vande Mataram and its role in awakening national consciousness. “Today we are inaugurating an exhibition. Tomorrow, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release commemorative coins and postage stamps,” the minister announced.

The event features exhibitions showcasing the song’s historical journey, its contribution to India’s independence movement, and its continued relevance in modern India. Officials said the commemoration will include cultural performances, literary sessions, and archival displays celebrating the spirit of Vande Mataram.

The iconic song, written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1875, became a rallying cry for freedom fighters and continues to evoke deep national pride.
