IMD Warns of Heatwave Across North, Central & Eastern India; Temperatures Set to Rise by 2–4°C

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department has issued a fresh heatwave alert across large parts of northwest, central, and eastern India, warning that temperatures are set to rise sharply over the coming days.

According to the weather department, maximum temperatures are expected to increase by 2–4 degrees Celsius, intensifying heatwave conditions across several states beginning this week. The warning comes as summer sets in early, with many regions already experiencing above-normal temperatures.

States such as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh are likely to witness particularly severe conditions, with temperatures forecast to cross 43°C in some areas. The IMD has cautioned that the heatwave could expand in intensity and geographical spread as the week progresses.

In northwest India, including Delhi and surrounding regions, temperatures have already been rising steadily, with forecasts indicating further escalation. Weather experts say this trend is consistent with a broader pattern of above-normal heat expected during the March–May summer season.

The IMD has also highlighted that central and eastern parts of the country will face similar hot and humid conditions, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. Authorities have urged people to take precautions such as staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, and limiting outdoor activities.

Meanwhile, contrasting weather patterns are expected in other parts of the country, with the northeastern region likely to receive heavy rainfall even as large swathes of India endure extreme heat.

The latest alert underscores growing concerns over rising temperatures and more frequent heatwaves, as India braces for what could be an intense summer season in 2026.
