Delhi Schools to Lead Year-Long Anti-Pollution Drive, Turning Questions into Action

New Delhi: In a significant step toward tackling the capital’s persistent air pollution crisis, the Delhi government has launched a year-long environmental awareness campaign in schools, aiming to transform students’ curiosity into meaningful action.

The initiative, inspired by questions often raised by children—such as why the sun appears hazy or why breathing feels difficult—seeks to channel this awareness into sustained environmental engagement. Schools across the city will now serve as active platforms for promoting eco-friendly practices and responsible behaviour.

Under the programme, all government, aided, and private schools have been directed to conduct regular activities throughout the 2026–27 academic session. These will focus on key issues such as air pollution, plastic waste, water conservation, and noise control, ensuring that environmental awareness becomes part of everyday learning rather than occasional events.

The campaign adopts a structured, month-wise approach. It began with anti-plastic drives in April, followed by themes like biodiversity, waste management, and water conservation in subsequent months. Special emphasis will be placed on combating air pollution during winter, when pollution levels typically peak in Delhi.

Schools have also been instructed to implement practical on-campus measures, including waste segregation, awareness activities during morning assemblies, and encouraging students to adopt anti-littering habits both inside and outside school premises. The broader goal is to embed sustainable practices into students’ daily lives and influence community behaviour.

The move reflects the government’s recognition that pollution in Delhi is not just a seasonal issue but a year-round challenge requiring continuous action. By involving young students, authorities aim to create long-term behavioural change and build a more environmentally conscious generation.

With rising concerns over the health impact of pollution—especially on children—the initiative positions schools at the forefront of Delhi’s fight for cleaner air, turning classrooms into hubs of awareness and action.
