New Delhi, April 2026: Marking International Bat Appreciation Day, Delhi-NCR witnessed the launch of its first-ever field publication dedicated to bats, accompanied by an engaging “bat walk” at Sunder Nursery to raise awareness about the often-overlooked mammals.

First-of-its-Kind Bat Field Publication

The newly released fold-out guide focuses on bat species found in Delhi-NCR, aiming to make scientific knowledge more accessible to the public and encourage interest in urban biodiversity.

Experts highlighted that bats are frequently misunderstood, and such initiatives are crucial to changing public perception and promoting conservation.

‘Bat Walk’ Brings Citizens Closer to Urban Wildlife

Following the launch, a guided bat walk was conducted at Sunder Nursery, led by bat researcher Dr. Rohit Chakravarty.

Participants got a chance to:

  • Observe bats in their natural habitat
  • Learn about their behaviour and ecological role
  • Understand how bats contribute to ecosystems

The event helped demystify bats and offered a hands-on learning experience for residents.

Highlighting Ecological Importance of Bats

Experts emphasised that bats play a vital role in:

  • Pollination and seed dispersal
  • Pest control by consuming insects
  • Maintaining ecological balance in urban environments

Despite their importance, bats are often feared due to myths and lack of awareness.

Sunder Nursery as Urban Biodiversity Hub

The event venue, Sunder Nursery, is a 16th-century heritage park and biodiversity hotspot, home to hundreds of plant species and diverse wildlife, making it ideal for such educational activities.

Changing Perception Through Public Engagement

Organisers noted that initiatives like bat walks and field guides can:

  • Build public awareness and scientific curiosity
  • Encourage citizen participation in conservation
  • Reduce stigma surrounding lesser-known species

A Step Toward Urban Wildlife Conservation

The launch of the bat field guide and public engagement events signals a growing effort to promote urban biodiversity awareness in Delhi-NCR, encouraging people to appreciate and protect even the most misunderstood species.
