New Delhi: In a significant push to strengthen emergency response systems, the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi reviewed the operational readiness of the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) and issued directions for stricter enforcement of fire safety norms across the city.

The review focused on improving response efficiency, safety compliance, and enforcement mechanisms, particularly in high-risk and densely populated areas of the capital.

Focus on Fire Service Readiness

During the review, the LG assessed the overall preparedness of the Delhi Fire Service, including manpower deployment, equipment availability, and response capabilities.

Officials were instructed to ensure faster emergency response times, enhanced coordination among departments, and regular inspection of vulnerable buildings and commercial establishments.

Stricter Enforcement of Safety Norms

The LG directed authorities to implement tighter fire safety enforcement measures, especially in commercial hubs, high-rise buildings, markets, and crowded public spaces.

He emphasized that routine violations of fire safety rules must be dealt with firmly, and stressed the need for proactive inspections rather than reactive action after incidents.

Strengthening Preventive Measures

As part of the new approach, the administration has been asked to focus on:

  • Regular fire safety audits in public and private buildings
  • Strict action against non-compliant establishments
  • Improved coordination between civic bodies and fire officials
  • Awareness campaigns on fire prevention and safety protocols

Officials said the goal is to shift towards a preventive fire safety model, reducing the risk of incidents before they occur.

Upgrading Emergency Response Systems

The review also highlighted the need to further strengthen firefighting infrastructure and technology adoption, including better-equipped fire stations, modern rescue tools, and improved communication systems.

The LG stressed that the Delhi Fire Service must remain fully prepared to handle emergencies, especially during peak summer months and festival seasons when fire risks increase significantly.

Government’s Safety Push

The directives come amid the administration’s broader focus on urban safety and disaster preparedness, with an emphasis on ensuring quick response, strict compliance, and zero tolerance for negligence in fire safety matters.

Officials said the review reflects a continued effort to modernise the fire service and enhance public safety across Delhi’s rapidly growing urban landscape.
