Shehzad Poonawalla Questions TMC Over Action Against MP Accused of ‘Lowering Parliament’s Dignity’

A fresh political confrontation erupted on Thursday after BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticised the Trinamool Congress (TMC) over its handling of an alleged misconduct incident involving one of its Members of Parliament. Speaking in Delhi, Poonawalla questioned whether the TMC would take internal disciplinary action or rely solely on the Speaker of the Lok Sabha to intervene.

“The question is — will the TMC take action against its MP or wait for the Speaker to do so?” he asked, challenging the party’s oft-asserted claim of being a strong defender of parliamentary values. Poonawalla said the TMC frequently positions itself as a champion of democratic norms, but its response in this case would determine whether those claims hold true.

Accusing the TMC MP of behaviour that “lowered the dignity of the Parliament and the Constitution,” Poonawalla said the party must demonstrate accountability if it wishes to uphold the standards it advocates. “They say they are defenders of parliamentary democracy. What will be the action TMC will take against the erring MP?” he said.

The remarks add to the ongoing tension between the BJP and TMC, as both parties continue to clash on issues related to parliamentary conduct and political ethics. The TMC has not yet issued an official response to Poonawalla’s comments.
