PM Modi Emphasizes Need for Justice in Local Languages, Lauds Supreme Court’s Translation Initiative

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday underscored the importance of ensuring that the language of justice is one that people can easily understand. Speaking at an event in New Delhi, PM Modi said that access to justice is not only about legal aid but also about making the law and its processes linguistically accessible to citizens.

“There’s another aspect of legal aid that I often discuss: the language of justice should be one that the person seeking it understands,” the Prime Minister remarked. “This is crucial when drafting laws. When people understand the law in their own language, it leads to better compliance and a deeper sense of trust in the justice system.”

PM Modi emphasized that legal awareness and inclusivity depend heavily on the language used in legal documents, judgments, and proceedings. He highlighted the importance of translating judgments and laws into local languages so that people from all regions can engage meaningfully with the legal system.

Appreciating the judiciary’s ongoing efforts, the Prime Minister commended the Supreme Court’s initiative to translate over 80,000 judgments into 18 Indian languages, calling it a landmark step toward linguistic inclusivity in justice delivery.

“This initiative ensures that justice is not limited by language barriers. It makes the legal system more participatory and people-centric,” PM Modi said.

His remarks reflect the government’s broader emphasis on using regional languages in governance and public communication to strengthen the connection between institutions and citizens.
