Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Monday criticised opposition parties for “politicising” the discussion on the 150 years of Vande Mataram during a debate in the Lok Sabha. He said the House witnessed an important historical discussion that highlighted the unifying role of the national song during India’s freedom struggle.

A historical discussion took place in Parliament on the 150 years of Vande Mataram… Some opposition leaders also politicised Vande Mataram,” Shekhawat said. Emphasising its significance, he added, “The way Vande Mataram played a big role in uniting the nation during the struggle for independence, today also we should unite to make the nation—Viksit Bharat.

The minister also responded sharply to Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s remarks during the debate. Reasserting the BJP’s stand, Shekhawat said, “BJP leaves no stone unturned in respecting the freedom fighters of the nation.

He further accused the Congress of having a history of divisive politics. “Those who imposed Emergency on the nation, divided India based on caste, language for their political benefits — we cannot expect much from them,” he added.

The debate on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram has triggered intense political exchanges, with both government and opposition leaders using the occasion to underline contrasting narratives around nationalism and historical legacy.
