Union Minister Nitin Gadkari Advocates for Stainless Steel in Coastal Bridge Construction

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has called for the use of stainless steel in the construction of bridges located near coastal areas to enhance durability and resistance to corrosion. Speaking on the issue, Gadkari highlighted the advantages of stainless steel, particularly in environments prone to high moisture and salt exposure.

Gadkari’s remarks came as he discussed past experiences and challenges faced in infrastructure projects. “Stainless steel should be used in the construction of bridges built close to the sea,” Gadkari emphasized. He pointed out that stainless steel offers superior resistance to rust and corrosion, making it ideal for coastal constructions where traditional materials may falter.

The Minister referenced a specific example to underline his point. “If stainless steel had been used for the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji, it would have never collapsed,” Gadkari noted. His comments reflect a broader concern about the long-term durability of infrastructure subjected to harsh environmental conditions.

Gadkari also shared a personal anecdote from his tenure as Maharashtra's Minister for Public Works. He recounted an incident during the execution of a project involving the construction of 55 flyovers in Mumbai, where he was misled about the rust-proof qualities of iron rods. “A person fooled me by applying powder coating on iron rods and claiming they were rust-proof,” Gadkari explained. Despite assurances, the rods eventually began to rust, highlighting the need for more reliable materials.

The Union Minister's recommendation is to use stainless steel for construction projects within 30 kilometers of the sea to prevent similar issues. His advocacy for this material reflects a commitment to enhancing the longevity and safety of infrastructure projects in coastal regions.

Gadkari’s comments are expected to influence future infrastructure planning and material choices, particularly in areas vulnerable to environmental degradation. By emphasizing the importance of using stainless steel, the Minister aims to improve the resilience and sustainability of crucial projects across India’s coastal areas.
