97 Km, 65 Stations: Delhi Govt Prepares Major Metro Expansion Plan for Outer Regions

DELHI: The Delhi government is set to unveil a 97-km expansion of the metro network under Phase V(b), adding around 65 new stations across the capital, in a move aimed at extending rapid transit connectivity to outer and underserved areas. The proposal, to be announced by the chief minister, is expected to improve public transport access, reduce traffic congestion, and support growing population needs in peripheral parts of the city.

Officials said the plan includes seven new metro corridors that will connect key outer Delhi regions, many of which currently rely heavily on road-based transport. Areas such as Narela, Najafgarh, Mithapur, and Khera Kalan are expected to be linked with the existing metro network, significantly improving connectivity for residents in these localities.

The proposed corridors will include a mix of elevated and underground sections, along with interchange points to integrate with existing metro lines. The expansion is designed to strengthen last-mile connectivity and provide seamless travel options across different parts of Delhi.

According to preliminary estimates, the project is expected to involve an investment of approximately ₹48,000 crore, making it one of the largest infrastructure initiatives in the city’s transport sector. The proposal will be sent to the central government for approval, as required for major metro rail projects.

Officials said the expansion is part of a broader strategy to address long-standing gaps in metro connectivity in outer Delhi. While central and inner parts of the city are well served by the existing metro network, several peripheral regions continue to face limited access, leading to dependence on private vehicles and road transport. The new plan aims to reduce this imbalance by extending metro services to areas with growing residential and industrial activity.

The corridors proposed under Phase V(b) include routes such as Dhansa Bus Stand–Nangloi, Central Secretariat–Kishangarh, Samaypur Badli–Narela, Kirti Nagar–Palam, Jor Bagh–Mithapur, Shastri Park–Mayur Vihar Phase III, and Keshavpuram–Rohini Sector 34. These routes are expected to improve connectivity across north, west, and east Delhi.

Urban transport officials said the project is likely to reduce travel time for daily commuters, ease pressure on major roads, and contribute to lower vehicular emissions. By expanding access to public transport, the government aims to encourage a shift away from private vehicles, which are a major contributor to congestion and air pollution in the city.

The Phase V(b) proposal builds on ongoing metro expansion efforts, including Phase IV projects currently under construction. Earlier plans under Phase V(a) involved a smaller addition to the network, but the new proposal significantly increases the scale of expansion, indicating a long-term focus on strengthening mass transit infrastructure.

The Delhi Metro network, one of the largest in India, already connects multiple parts of the National Capital Region. Officials said the proposed expansion will further enhance regional connectivity and support economic activity by improving access to workplaces, educational institutions, and commercial centres.

Once approved and implemented, the project is expected to benefit a large number of commuters, particularly those living in outer districts. Authorities said the expansion aligns with broader goals of promoting sustainable urban mobility, improving accessibility, and reducing environmental impact in the capital.
