Gurgaon to see relief from heat as pre-monsoon showers expected from May 2

Gurgaon (Gurugram), Haryana: Weather conditions in Gurgaon are expected to change significantly from May 2, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and a noticeable drop in temperatures after a prolonged period of intense heat across Delhi-NCR. The shift is being caused by an active western disturbance over northwest India, which is likely to create unstable weather conditions for several days. While this is expected to bring relief from rising temperatures, it may also cause localized disruptions.

According to the IMD, the city is likely to see partly cloudy skies with intermittent rain or thundershowers between May 2 and May 6, along with lightning and increasing wind speeds during storm activity. Daytime temperatures, which had been around 39–40°C, are expected to fall to the mid-30°C range during this period before gradually increasing again once the system weakens. Weather conditions may vary across Delhi-NCR, with some areas experiencing stronger storms than others.

Meteorologists have linked this change to a western disturbance, a weather system that carries moisture from the Mediterranean region into northern India. When it interacts with the high temperatures typical of May, it often results in pre-monsoon activity such as thunderstorms, dust storms, and short spells of heavy rain. These conditions are common during the transition from spring to summer, when the atmosphere becomes more unstable.

In Gurgaon and nearby areas, such systems often lead to sudden gusts of wind, commonly known as “andhi”, followed by brief but intense rainfall. Experts say these weather events are part of the pre-monsoon cycle, which usually peaks in May and early June before the arrival of the southwest monsoon.

The IMD has also indicated that night temperatures will remain relatively moderate, likely staying in the mid-20°C range, while daytime heat will ease due to cloud cover and rainfall. However, officials have warned that thunderstorms may bring strong winds and lightning, which can be hazardous, especially in open spaces.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious during storm periods, particularly in the evening and nighttime hours, when such activity is more likely. Possible effects include traffic disruptions, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and temporary power outages, especially if rainfall is heavy. Strong winds may also affect construction sites and temporary structures.

Commuters are being encouraged to plan their travel carefully and avoid unnecessary movement during severe weather. Civic agencies and emergency services are expected to stay alert to manage any weather-related issues.

The IMD has stated that these unstable weather conditions may continue through the first week of May, after which temperatures are expected to rise again as the western disturbance weakens. However, weather experts note that early May typically sees frequent shifts between heat and pre-monsoon activity in northern India.

The situation in Gurgaon reflects a broader trend across north and northwest India, where regions are likely to experience a mix of heatwave conditions and pre-monsoon rainfall, indicating the ongoing seasonal transition.
