Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan attended the 64th Convocation Week of The Graduate School at ICAR–Indian Agricultural Research Institute in Delhi, where he called upon graduating students to dedicate their knowledge and skills to the service of farmers and the nation’s food security.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister expressed hope that the agricultural education imparted at the premier institute would not remain confined to classrooms or research papers, but would be reflected meaningfully in the lives and careers of the students. “I hope that this agricultural education is reflected in the lives of the students, and they are dedicated to agriculture and serving farmers,” he said, encouraging young scholars to become catalysts of change in the rural economy.

Chouhan emphasized that agriculture remains the backbone of India’s economy and a crucial pillar for sustaining livelihoods across the country. He underlined the importance of innovation, research, and technology in transforming the agricultural landscape, particularly in the face of emerging challenges such as climate change, soil degradation, and fluctuating market conditions. He urged graduates to focus on practical, farmer-centric solutions that can increase productivity while ensuring sustainability.

Highlighting India’s achievements in achieving self-sufficiency in food production, the Minister noted that the responsibility of maintaining and strengthening the country’s food security now rests with the new generation of agricultural scientists and professionals. He stressed that ensuring food security is not only about producing adequate grains, but also about enhancing nutritional security, improving supply chains, and empowering farmers with better resources and knowledge.

The convocation ceremony celebrated the academic accomplishments of students across various disciplines of agricultural science, biotechnology, and allied sectors. Faculty members and researchers were also acknowledged for their contributions to advancing agricultural research and innovation.

Concluding his address, Chouhan encouraged the graduates to view agriculture not merely as a profession, but as a mission to uplift farmers and strengthen the nation. He expressed confidence that the students of ICAR–IARI would play a significant role in shaping a resilient and prosperous agricultural future for India.
