Population Shift in India: A Study by EAC-PM and Reactions

New Delhi, India - A recent study conducted by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) has revealed significant shifts in the religious demographics of India. The study indicates that the population share of Hindus fell by 7.81 per cent between 1950 and 2015, while the share of minorities increased.

The findings have sparked a debate among political circles and social scientists about the implications of this demographic shift on the socio-economic fabric of the country.

Dr K Laxman, National President of BJP OBC Morcha, expressed his concerns over the population imbalance. He stated, “Population imbalance is not right. By implementing the Uniform Civil Code, there will be development in the country…”

The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is a proposal to replace the personal laws, which are based on the scriptures and customs of each major religious community in India, with a common set of laws governing every citizen.

Dr Laxman’s statement suggests that the implementation of the UCC could potentially address the issue of population imbalance and contribute to the country’s development. However, this perspective is likely to face opposition from various quarters, given the sensitive nature of the subject.

The EAC-PM study and the reactions it has elicited underscore the complex interplay between religion, politics, and development in India. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how policymakers will respond to these findings and what measures will be taken to ensure balanced growth and harmony among all sections of society.
