PM Modi Unveils ‘Seva Teerth’ for PMO, NSCS and Cabinet Secretariat Complex

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday unveiled the name ‘Seva Teerth’ for the complex housing the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), and the Cabinet Secretariat in Delhi, describing it as part of a broader effort to redefine governance through service and national commitment.

The naming ceremony reflects the government’s ongoing initiative to move away from symbols associated with India’s colonial past and promote what it calls a mindset shift rooted in Indian values and public service. The Prime Minister has repeatedly emphasized the importance of aligning institutions and public spaces with ideals that reflect independent India’s aspirations and civilizational ethos.

Since 2014, several key locations and institutions have been renamed as part of this broader transformation. One of the most prominent changes was the renaming of Rajpath to Kartavya Path, symbolizing a shift from colonial legacy to a focus on duty and responsibility. Similarly, Race Course Road, the official residence of the Prime Minister, was renamed Lok Kalyan Marg to reflect a people-centric approach to governance.

In another significant move, the Central Secretariat was re-envisioned as Kartavya Bhavan, while several Raj Bhavans and Raj Niwas were renamed as Lok Bhavan and Lok Niwas respectively, reinforcing the message of public ownership and service-oriented administration.

With the unveiling of ‘Seva Teerth’ for the complex housing key decision-making bodies such as the PMO, NSCS, and Cabinet Secretariat, the government seeks to convey that these institutions function as centers of dedicated national service. The term ‘Seva Teerth’ combines the idea of service (seva) with that of a sacred place (teerth), symbolically presenting governance as a form of national duty.

The move underscores the Centre’s broader narrative of decolonization of public spaces and institutions, positioning the changes as part of a larger effort to reshape administrative identity and national consciousness in line with contemporary India’s values and aspirations.
