In a powerful display of unity and wellness, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the global celebration of the International Day of Yoga in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. The event, held annually on June 21st, promotes physical and mental health through the ancient practice of yoga.

A Symbolic Gesture: The Assamese Gamosa

As the sun rose over the picturesque Dal Lake, PM Modi participated in a yoga session alongside thousands of participants. Notably, he wore a traditional Assamese Gamosa—a white and red cloth with cultural significance. The Gamosa symbolizes hospitality, respect, and unity, reflecting the spirit of yoga that transcends borders.

Yoga Amidst the Himalayan Landscape

The serene surroundings of Srinagar provided a breathtaking backdrop for the yoga session. Against the majestic Himalayan peaks, participants flowed through asanas (yoga postures) with grace and determination. The rhythmic breaths synchronized with the gentle ripples of the lake, fostering a sense of inner peace.

Global Participation

While PM Modi led the session in Srinagar, millions around the world joined virtually. From New York to Tokyo, yoga enthusiasts practiced together, emphasizing the universal appeal of this ancient discipline. The pandemic may have physically distanced us, but yoga connected hearts and minds across continents.

Yoga’s Role in Wellness

In his address, PM Modi highlighted the holistic benefits of yoga. “Yoga is not just about physical fitness,” he said. “It is a path to mental well-being, stress reduction, and spiritual growth.” He encouraged everyone to incorporate yoga into their daily lives.

A Call for Unity and Resilience

As the sun reached its zenith, participants raised their arms in the Namaste gesture—a symbol of respect and unity. PM Modi reiterated that yoga teaches us resilience, balance, and harmony. “In these challenging times,” he said, “yoga is our anchor.”

The celebration concluded with a collective meditation—a moment of stillness amidst the Himalayan grandeur. As participants closed their eyes, the message echoed: In yoga, we find strength, peace, and a shared purpose.
