New Delhi — The ongoing negotiations for the India-European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement (FTA) are progressing positively, according to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. Addressing the media, Jaiswal stated that “talks are progressing well” and confirmed that the next round of discussions is scheduled for September in New Delhi.

The India-EU FTA is a key step toward strengthening economic and strategic relations between the two regions. Both sides have expressed a strong commitment to finalizing the agreement within this year. “The leaders of both sides want this FTA to be concluded within this year,” said Jaiswal.

The FTA, once finalized, is expected to significantly boost bilateral trade by reducing tariffs, easing investment barriers, and enhancing cooperation across sectors such as digital trade, intellectual property, environment, and sustainable development.

India and the EU resumed negotiations for the FTA in 2022 after nearly a decade-long pause. The deal is seen as crucial for India’s efforts to diversify trade partnerships and gain better access to the European market, especially in the context of shifting global trade dynamics.

As the world’s fifth-largest economy and one of the fastest-growing major markets, India offers immense potential for European businesses. In return, Indian exporters are looking forward to greater access to the EU market, particularly in sectors like textiles, pharmaceuticals, and IT services.
