Digitization in India: A Leap Towards Transparency and Efficiency

Delhi, India - At the Viksit Bharat 2047 program held at Hansraj College, External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar highlighted the rapid digitization of India and its transformative impact on everyday life.

“Today if you look at the range, how digitized India has become. How many of you today anymore use cash? How many of you use your phone-based cashless payments? We think it is normal, but others don’t think that,” said Dr. Jaishankar, emphasizing the shift towards a cashless economy.

According to him, India is currently processing 10-11 billion cashless transactions per month, a figure that starkly contrasts with the 4 billion transactions per year in America and a maximum of 20 billion transactions per year in China. This indicates that India is leading the way in the adoption of digital payments, outpacing even the world’s largest economies.

Dr. Jaishankar also pointed out the efficiency brought about by digitization in public services. “People today get their income tax, housing allotments and driving licenses faster… We give passports faster…,” he noted, underscoring the speed and convenience offered by digital platforms.

Furthermore, he stressed that digitization has significantly reduced corruption. “Digital has cut down corruption because everything is digitally recorded… With transparency, honesty also comes,” he added.

The remarks by Dr. Jaishankar underscore the profound changes that digitization has brought to India, not only in terms of economic transactions but also in the delivery of public services. As India continues to embrace the digital revolution,
