Sarita Vihar, Delhi - In a recent public meeting, Defence Minister and senior BJP leader, Rajnath Singh, opened up about his experiences during the Emergency period in India.

“I was 24 years old when I was thrown into jail for raising my voice against the Emergency,” Singh said, recalling the dark days of the 1975-77 period when then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had declared a state of Emergency in the country.

Singh was kept in the Central Jail Naini for 16 months. “All the democratic provisions were stopped and they (Congress) implemented dictatorship,” he added, criticizing the Congress party for its actions during that time.

In a poignant revelation, Singh shared that his mother passed away while he was still in jail. Despite the tragic circumstances, he was not granted parole. “My mother died, but still, they did not give me parole,” he said, highlighting the harsh conditions political prisoners had to endure during the Emergency.

The Defence Minister’s revelations provide a stark reminder of the Emergency era, a period often regarded as one of the most controversial times in India’s political history. Singh’s personal account adds a human perspective to the historical events, shedding light on the individual struggles and sacrifices made in the fight for democracy.
