Marking the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in 1975, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders reiterated their stance against what they described as one of the darkest chapters in Indian democracy. Speaking on the occasion, BJP MP Jagdambika Pal said the Emergency was a blatant violation of citizens’ fundamental rights and a political move solely for the survival of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the Congress party.

The Constitution is supreme, and within it, citizens have the right to free expression. But in 1975, those rights were brutally curtailed for political gain. The Emergency was not about national interest—it was about power,” Pal said.

He added that Satyagraha, a peaceful form of protest, is a democratic right, but during the Emergency, the entire nation was turned into a jail. “Anyone who dared to speak was thrown behind bars. It was the murder of democracy,” he remarked.

The BJP has been conducting awareness campaigns across the country to remind citizens of the excesses committed during the 21-month Emergency period, including press censorship, suspension of civil liberties, and mass arrests of political opponents.

Party leaders are using the 50th anniversary to underscore the importance of safeguarding constitutional rights and to highlight the contrast between democratic values and authoritarian actions of the past.
