Union Minister Piyush Goyal Criticizes UPA Era as a 'Failed Experiment' at Conference

Union Minister Piyush Goyal delivered a sharp critique of the previous UPA administration during his speech at the 'Journey Towards Viksit Bharat: A Post Union Budget 2024-25 Conference' in Delhi. Goyal’s comments focused on contrasting the economic performance and governance of the UPA government with the current administration’s achievements and policies.

Reflecting on the past, Goyal recalled statements made by former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram in 2004, who described inheriting a strong economy with robust growth and healthy foreign exchange reserves. "In 2004, the then Finance Minister P. Chidambaram is on record to say that he has inherited a very strong economy. The growth was over 8%, foreign exchange reserves were robust compared to the size of the economy," Goyal said.

However, Goyal sharply criticized the UPA government’s performance over the subsequent decade. He argued that despite a promising start, the UPA administration failed to implement key reforms and address critical issues. "I have read ten speeches of the UPA government, never once has there been a mention of bringing in a legal guarantee for MSP. Never once did they speak about trying to uplift the poor by giving them free homes, free insurance, free food grains," Goyal said.

Goyal highlighted the economic downturn during the UPA years, stating, "In the ten years of the UPA government, they brought the nation down to a growth rate of about 4.4%, with inflation at spiraling heights." He continued, "They left behind for PM Modi a fragile economy which the world looked down upon."

The Union Minister pointed to high fiscal deficits, soaring inflation, and deteriorating foreign exchange reserves as indicators of poor economic management by the UPA. "They (Congress) left behind the country high fiscal deficits, high inflation, low growth, very low foreign exchange reserves," Goyal claimed. He labeled the UPA’s decade in power as a "failed experiment" and criticized the governance model of the time. "10 years of UPA were a failed experiment that reflected a failed governance model and brought the people of their country to their knees," Goyal added.

Furthermore, Goyal took aim at the corruption scandals that plagued the UPA regime, asserting that they undermined public trust and contributed to the economic challenges faced by the country. "One after another corruption scandals tumbled out of the UPA regime," he said.

Goyal’s remarks are part of a broader narrative by the current government to underscore its achievements and contrast them with the previous administration’s record. The 'Journey Towards Viksit Bharat' conference provided a platform for Goyal to emphasize the progress made under the Modi government and to critique the economic and governance issues of the past.

As India continues to navigate its economic path, Goyal’s address reflects an ongoing effort to highlight the perceived successes of the current administration while drawing contrasts with past governance.
