Tamil Nadu BJP State President K. Annamalai expressed gratitude to External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar following a productive meeting in Delhi. Annamalai highlighted the EAM’s ongoing support for Tamil Nadu’s fishermen, particularly in addressing recent crises and long-standing concerns.

During the meeting, Annamalai commended Dr. Jaishankar for his decisive intervention in a recent tragic incident where a Tamil fisherman was killed. He noted that Dr. Jaishankar’s direction to the High Commissioner led to the prompt repatriation of the deceased fisherman’s body to Tamil Nadu within 24 hours. Additionally, two fishermen who had been arrested were also swiftly returned.

“Since Prime Minister Modi’s government came to power in 2014, there have been no incidents of firing by the Sri Lankan Navy in the high seas,” Annamalai stated. “We appreciate the EAM’s ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of our fishermen and the resolution of incidents involving them.”

Annamalai further revealed that the delegation requested EAM Dr. Jaishankar’s assistance in the early release of 49 Tamil fishermen currently detained. Dr. Jaishankar assured that he is personally overseeing the matter and emphasized his commitment to resolving it as soon as possible.

In addition to addressing immediate concerns, Annamalai highlighted several long-term issues discussed during the meeting, including subsidies, fiberglass boat provisions, and the establishment of packaged water units for the fishing community. Dr. Jaishankar noted these concerns and assured that they would be addressed positively.

The meeting also touched on the future of bilateral cooperation between India and Sri Lanka, with EAM Dr. Jaishankar promising that the 2+2 joint working group between the two nations would convene soon. This group will include discussions involving the India-Sri Lankan Fishermen Association, aimed at fostering better relations and resolving ongoing issues between the fishing communities of both countries.

Annamalai expressed satisfaction with the EAM’s response and praised his proactive approach to addressing the grievances of Tamil Nadu’s fishermen. The outcomes of this meeting are expected to enhance support for the fishing community and strengthen India-Sri Lanka maritime relations.
