Delhi, India - The Supreme Court’s rejection of the plea for 100% EVM-VVPAT verification has been hailed as a victory for democracy by BJP National Spokesperson, Shehzad Poonawalla.

“Today is the great day for democracy as it has won,” Poonawalla said, adding that the verdict was a win for Babasaheb Ambedkar, the Constitution, and the Election Commission of India (ECI). He criticized the Congress and its alliance for spreading rumours and making unfounded claims against the EVM.

“The Congress, its entire alliance, and its ecosystem which were spreading rumours and unfounded claims against EVM have lost. They must apologise to the country,” he demanded. He accused the opposition of having a double standard, celebrating the EVM and ECI when they win elections in states like Telangana and Punjab, but questioning the institutions when they face defeat.

“Their mindset is exposed today…when they are going to lose the elections, then that time they start questioning the institutions, which shows their mindset,” Poonawalla pointed out.

He further called on those who were insulting the Constitution and Babasaheb Ambedkar to apologise and stop spreading canards about India and its institutions. “Those who were insulting the Constitution and Babasaheb Ambedkar should apologise and must stop spreading canards about India and its institutions time and again,” he concluded.

The Supreme Court’s decision and Poonawalla’s remarks underscore the ongoing debate around the use of EVMs in India, a topic that continues to be at the forefront of political discourse.
