MCD Plans Major Push to Bring More Properties Under Tax Net in FY 2026–27

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated a series of measures to widen its property tax base in the financial year 2026–27, aiming to boost revenue collection and improve civic services without increasing tax rates.

According to officials, the civic body will prioritise the identification of unassessed and under-assessed properties across the city. A major part of the strategy involves the use of Geographic Information System (GIS)-based mapping to create an accurate digital database of properties and detect discrepancies in existing records.

The MCD will also integrate data from multiple departments, including electricity and water utilities, building plan approvals, and property registration records. This data-driven approach is expected to help bring more properties under the tax net and reduce revenue leakage.

To ensure on-ground verification, survey teams will conduct door-to-door inspections in selected areas. These surveys will focus on checking property size, usage category, and any unauthorised constructions that may have escaped taxation.

In a bid to improve voluntary compliance, the corporation will continue awareness campaigns and offer incentives such as rebates on timely tax payments and relief for self-declaration of correct property details.

At the same time, the MCD has indicated stricter enforcement measures against defaulters. Penalties, recovery proceedings, and, in extreme cases, sealing of properties may be undertaken to ensure compliance.

Officials said the focus remains on expanding the tax base rather than increasing tax rates, making the system more equitable while strengthening municipal finances.

The move is expected to significantly enhance revenue generation, enabling the MCD to invest more in sanitation, infrastructure development, and other essential public services across Delhi.

Further details regarding implementation and timelines are likely to be announced in the coming weeks.
