New Delhi: In a significant move to strengthen the capital’s healthcare infrastructure, the Delhi government has proposed adding 108 new postgraduate (PG), DNB, and fellowship seats across its medical institutions.

The proposal, put forward by the Delhi Health Department, aims to enhance medical education capacity and address the shortage of specialised doctors in the city.

Out of the total 108 proposed seats, officials confirmed 67 seats for MD/MS (postgraduate) programmes, 36 seats for Diplomate of National Board (DNB) courses, and 5 fellowship positions. The distribution is intended to ensure a balanced expansion across multiple specialised medical streams.

The seats will be introduced across 10 government medical and teaching institutions, marking a major expansion in advanced training capacity in Delhi.

Key allocations include 35 MD/MS seats at Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), 24 MD/MS seats at Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College, and 4 MD/MS seats at Delhi State Cancer Institute. In the DNB category, 18 seats are proposed at Indira Gandhi Medical College, 8 at Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, 4 at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, 2 each at Guru Gobind Singh Government Hospital and Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital, and 2 at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

Additionally, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital will receive 3 fellowship positions, while the Delhi State Cancer Institute will get 2 fellowship seats. The University College of Medical Sciences (with GTB Hospital) is also set to receive 4 MD/MS seats.

Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said the initiative is a key step toward strengthening the healthcare ecosystem and improving service delivery across the capital.

Officials noted that the expansion will create a larger pool of highly skilled and specialised doctors, improve patient care, and address workforce shortages in public hospitals.

With growing population pressure and rising demand for healthcare services, the move is expected to bridge gaps in specialist availability and ensure better-equipped hospitals, reinforcing Delhi’s public health system in the long run.
