On the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, Delhi Minister Majinder Singh Sirsa strongly condemned the events of 1975, calling it one of the darkest chapters in Indian democracy. Speaking at a commemorative event, Sirsa questioned the intent and mindset of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, under whose regime civil liberties were suspended and thousands were imprisoned.

“What kind of mentality did a Prime Minister have that millions of people were killed?” Sirsa asked, adding, “No matter how big a dictator someone is, how could they even imagine such a situation?” He emphasized that the Congress party’s greatest failing is its lack of remorse for the injustices committed during the Emergency, which is why, he said, “even after 50 years, we are compelled to remember this day.”

Sirsa also highlighted the humanitarian contributions of Gurdwaras during that time. “While the country was in crisis and many were imprisoned unjustly, Gurdwaras stepped forward with langar services in large numbers to support those affected,” he said, praising the Sikh community's enduring spirit of service.

His remarks come as the BJP and several organizations mark the 50-year milestone with public programs and tributes to those who fought against the Emergency. The occasion is being used to underscore the importance of civil liberties and to remind citizens of the resilience of India’s democratic spirit.
