Delhi Minister Condemns Ban on Indian Attire in Restaurant, Calls it ‘Cheap Mentality’

Delhi Minister Manjinder Sirsa has strongly criticized an incident in which a restaurant in the national capital allegedly denied entry to a person wearing traditional Indian attire. Calling the act “a very cheap mentality,” Sirsa stressed that such practices are unacceptable, especially in a country that proudly promotes its culture and traditions worldwide.

“It is a very cheap mentality to not allow Indian attire in a restaurant. We promote Indian culture and Indian attire worldwide. In such a case, if someone does this in the nation's capital, it is wrong. Action will be taken,” Sirsa said.

The minister’s statement comes amid growing outrage on social media, where many users have shared their disapproval of the alleged dress code policy. Critics argue that banning Indian clothing — such as sarees, salwar suits, and kurta-pajamas — in any public venue undermines the nation’s heritage and disrespects its cultural identity.

Sirsa confirmed that authorities are looking into the matter and assured that appropriate action will be taken against the establishment if the allegations are proven true. “This is India, and our culture is our pride. No one has the right to insult it,” he added.

The controversy has reignited the debate over dress codes in private establishments, with many calling for clearer guidelines to ensure that such policies do not discriminate against traditional clothing.

As the investigation proceeds, the incident has drawn attention to the broader issue of balancing business autonomy with respect for cultural values in India’s hospitality sector.
