Delhi Jal Board Launches e-KYC Drive to Identify Fake Water Connections and Upgrade Services

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is set to launch a city-wide e-KYC (electronic Know Your Customer) verification drive aimed at identifying fake, duplicate, and unregistered water connections in the national capital, while also improving overall service delivery and strengthening its consumer database.

The initiative comes in response to a major discrepancy flagged by officials between the number of electricity connections (over 60 lakh) and the significantly lower number of registered water connections (around 35 lakh) in Delhi. The mismatch has raised concerns about the presence of illegal or unrecorded water supply connections across several areas of the city.

As part of the exercise, the DJB will conduct a comprehensive verification of its consumer base to ensure that all water connections are properly documented and linked with verified user identities. The move is expected to help the board remove fake entries, regularise genuine consumers, and improve billing accuracy.

Officials stated that the e-KYC process will also help build a clean and updated digital database of water consumers, enabling better monitoring of supply, consumption patterns, and dues. The drive is aimed at reducing errors in billing and ensuring that services are delivered more efficiently to legitimate users.

The project is part of a broader effort by the DJB to modernise its systems through digital tools and improve transparency in water distribution. It is also expected to strengthen accountability by ensuring that every active connection is verified and traceable.

The initiative will be rolled out across Delhi in phases, covering all categories of consumers, including domestic, commercial, and industrial connections. The verification process is expected to play a key role in streamlining water management and improving governance of civic utilities in the city.

Officials believe that once completed, the e-KYC drive will not only help detect irregularities but also significantly enhance service reliability, customer data accuracy, and overall efficiency of the Delhi Jal Board’s operations.
