New Delhi, April 13, 2026: President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday led the nation in paying homage to the victims of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre on its 106th anniversary, remembering it as a defining moment in India’s freedom struggle.


President Murmu Pays Tribute to “Immortal Freedom Fighters”

President Murmu described the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh as immortal freedom fighters, emphasizing that their sacrifice awakened a new consciousness and strengthened the resolve for independence across the country.

In a message shared on X, she said the nation would always remain grateful for their supreme sacrifice and expressed confidence that their spirit of patriotism would continue to inspire citizens toward dedicated national service.


Vice President, PM Modi Recall Sacrifice and Spirit of Freedom

Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan paid solemn tributes, calling the massacre a poignant reminder of the cost of freedom and a testament to the resilience and courage of the Indian people. He added that the martyrs’ memory inspires commitment to justice, unity, and human dignity.

Prime Minister Modi also paid heartfelt homage, stating that the sacrifice of the martyrs reflects the indomitable spirit of India. He noted that their courage continues to inspire generations to uphold the values of liberty, justice, and dignity.

The Prime Minister also shared a Sanskrit subhashitam, urging citizens to nurture positive forces that strengthen the nation while firmly resisting divisive elements that create injustice and discontent.


Leaders Highlight Historical Significance

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said the massacre shook the conscience of the nation and united people in their struggle against colonial rule. He emphasized that the brutal firing on unarmed civilians ignited a stronger resolve for independence.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah termed the incident a reflection of the inhuman face of British rule, calling it a historic turning point that intensified the revolutionary spirit of India’s freedom movement. He also noted that the tragedy inspired revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh and Udham Singh.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre occurred on April 13, 1919, in Amritsar, where thousands had gathered during the festival of Baisakhi and to protest against the Rowlatt Act.
