New Delhi, April 2026: Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Monday announced that the government is actively working to bring back Formula One to India, with a target to host a race before 2027, ending a gap of nearly 13 years.

Preparations Underway for F1 Return

Speaking to the media, Mandaviya said that key issues related to the race track have been resolved, and infrastructure work is expected to be completed within the next six months.

He emphasized that efforts are being made to reintroduce India on the global motorsport calendar, with Formula One as a major focus.

MotoGP Also on the Cards

Apart from Formula One, the government is also planning to bring MotoGP events to India, with necessary upgrades and preparations currently underway.

F1 History in India: 2011–2013

India previously hosted the Indian Grand Prix for three consecutive years from 2011 to 2013 at the Buddh International Circuit.

  • All three races were won by Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing
  • The event was discontinued after 2013 due to taxation issues, high operational costs, and bureaucratic hurdles

Buddh Circuit’s Global Recognition

Designed by renowned circuit architect Hermann Tilke, the Buddh International Circuit was India’s first world-class motorsport venue and received positive feedback from drivers and teams.

However, a prolonged tax dispute led to the suspension of the race in 2014, and it was eventually dropped from the Formula One calendar.

Push to Strengthen Sports Ecosystem

Mandaviya reiterated that the government is focused on strengthening sports infrastructure and promoting diverse disciplines, encouraging youth to pursue careers in sports, including motorsports.
