New Delhi, April 6: The much-anticipated Delhi–Dehradun Expressway is set to be inaugurated on April 14, marking a major boost to connectivity between the national capital and Uttarakhand. The project, built at an estimated cost of around ₹12,000 crore, is expected to transform travel, tourism, and regional development.

Once operational, the expressway will cut travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from 6–6.5 hours to nearly 2.5–3 hours, offering a faster and smoother journey for commuters and tourists.

Route and Connectivity

The expressway will start from Akshardham in Delhi and pass through key regions in Uttar Pradesh, including:

Baghpat
Baraut
Shamli
Saharanpur

It will then enter Uttarakhand near Ganeshpur–Asharodi before reaching Dehradun. The corridor will also connect with major highways such as the Delhi–Meerut Expressway and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, improving regional traffic flow and reducing congestion.

Key Features of the Expressway
Total Length: Approximately 210–212 km
Configuration: 6-lane access-controlled highway (expandable to 8 lanes)
Speed Limit: Up to 100 km/h
Entry/Exit Points: Around 16
Underpasses: Over 100 for seamless connectivity
Railway Overbridges: 5
Tunnel: 340-metre tunnel near Datkali
Modern Facilities: Service roads, rest areas, and safety systems

The expressway has been designed as a high-speed, access-controlled corridor to ensure safe and efficient travel.

Eco-Friendly Design and Wildlife Protection

A major highlight of the project is a 12-km elevated wildlife corridor over the Rajaji National Park, one of the longest in Asia. The stretch includes animal underpasses and eco-sensitive construction features, allowing safe movement of wildlife and minimizing environmental impact.

Economic and Tourism Impact

Officials said the expressway will:

Boost tourism to Dehradun, Mussoorie, and nearby hill destinations
Improve logistics and trade between Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand
Reduce congestion on existing highways
Promote regional economic growth and infrastructure development

The project is expected to benefit daily commuters, transporters, and tourists, especially during peak travel seasons.

Project Timeline

The expressway project was approved in 2020, with construction beginning soon after. Despite delays due to technical and environmental challenges, the project is now nearing completion and ready for inauguration.
