Delhi Metro’s Double-Decker Flyover Project on Track for Year-End Launch

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to complete a key double-decker flyover along the Delhi Metro Pink Line by the end of the year, marking a major step forward in the capital’s efforts to modernize and decongest its transport infrastructure.

The project, part of Delhi Metro’s Phase IV expansion, features a unique multi-level design that integrates metro rail and road traffic into a single vertical corridor—an approach aimed at maximizing space utilization in densely populated areas.

Innovative multi-level infrastructure

The double-decker structure consists of a metro viaduct on the upper deck and a road flyover beneath it, allowing both rail and vehicular traffic to operate simultaneously. This design reduces the need for separate land acquisition and minimizes disruption in already congested zones.

The corridor passes through key areas in northeast Delhi, including stretches near Bhajanpura and Yamuna Vihar, where traffic congestion has long been a concern.

Construction progress and timeline

While metro services on this section of the Pink Line are already operational, work on the flyover—particularly the construction of entry and exit ramps—is in advanced stages. Officials said earlier delays due to pending approvals, including tree relocation and utility shifting, have now been resolved, accelerating the pace of construction.

The entire flyover is now expected to be completed and opened for public use by the end of 2026.

Expected impact on traffic and connectivity

Once operational, the flyover is expected to significantly ease congestion by diverting through-traffic away from surface roads. It will also improve travel time and provide smoother connectivity between east and northeast Delhi.

In addition, the integration of metro and road infrastructure is expected to enhance last-mile connectivity for commuters, making public transport a more convenient option.

Part of larger Phase IV expansion

The double-decker flyover is one of several such projects being developed under DMRC’s Phase IV plan, which emphasizes sustainable and space-efficient urban transport solutions. Similar corridors are being planned in other parts of the city to address rising traffic demand.

Outlook

With final construction work progressing steadily, the project is poised to become a landmark example of innovative urban infrastructure. Once completed, it is expected to play a crucial role in reducing congestion and improving mobility across key parts of Delhi.
