New Delhi: A scorching heat wave continued to grip Delhi and the surrounding NCR region on Wednesday, with temperatures soaring well above normal levels. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the national capital until May 26. Authorities have warned residents to remain vigilant due to the increased risk of heat-related illnesses.

According to the Meteorological Department, the Ridge area of Delhi experienced the most heat, reaching approximately 46.5 degrees Celsius, followed by Mungeshpur at 46.3 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature at Delhi's main weather station (Safdarjung) was 44.5 degrees Celsius, about four degrees above normal.

The IMD stated that heatwave conditions are likely to persist in isolated parts of Delhi-NCR over the next several days, with dry winds and clear skies worsening the situation. Meteorologists have also forecast strong surface winds during daytime hours, which may offer little relief as hot air continues to sweep across the region.

An orange alert means you need to "be prepared" for dangerous weather. Be especially careful with children, the elderly, and people with health conditions, as the severe weather could make them sick. Health experts have advised people to avoid stepping outdoors during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and immediately seek medical attention in case of symptoms such as dizziness, dehydration, or heatstroke.

The extreme weather in Delhi forms part of a broader heatwave pattern affecting large parts of north and central India. Several states including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan are also witnessing unusually high temperatures, with some districts recording temperatures nearing 48 degrees Celsius.

In view of the intense heat wave in Delhi, the municipal corporation and administration have stepped up their preparations. Officials are constantly monitoring water supply, electricity demand, and hospital arrangements to deal with the heat-related problems, as the prolonged heat is severely disrupting people's daily lives.

There will be no respite from the heat and scorching sun for the time being. The sun will only intensify in the coming days. The Meteorological Department advises that until the weather improves, you should only go out for essential work and take care of yourself.
