BBMB Installs Early Warning System on Beas River to Alert Residents During Water Release

  • April 7, 2026, 11:26 a.m.

The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has installed an Early Warning System (EWS) along the banks of the Beas River to enhance public safety during emergency water releases.

Real-Time Alerts for Nearby Residents

BBMB Chairman Manoj Tripathi inaugurated the system virtually and said the initiative will:

  • Alert residents in advance when excess water is released
  • Reduce risks during emergency situations
  • Improve disaster preparedness in riverbank areas

The system has been installed to notify people when water is discharged from the Pong Dam.

Six Units Installed in Vulnerable Areas

Under the project:

  • Six Early Warning System units have been installed
  • Locations were selected near residential areas along the river
  • The system will provide timely siren-based alerts

Replacing Manual Alert Mechanism

Earlier, the process involved:

  • BBMB teams and local administration visiting villages
  • Announcements through loudspeakers and public address systems

This method was:

  • Time-consuming
  • Less efficient during emergencies
  • Associated with higher risk of accidents

Boost to Disaster Preparedness

The new system is expected to:

  • Ensure faster communication
  • Minimise loss of life and property
  • Strengthen flood and water release management systems
