New Delhi, April 2026: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has intensified its monsoon preparedness, with Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar chairing a high-level review meeting and directing officials to tighten timelines for all pre-monsoon works.

Focus on Timely Completion of Works

During the meeting, the Commissioner stressed the need for strict adherence to deadlines and efficient execution of projects to avoid last-minute delays ahead of the rainy season.

Officials have been instructed to ensure that all critical works are completed well before the onset of monsoon.

Key Measures to Prevent Waterlogging

The preparedness plan includes a range of measures aimed at tackling recurring monsoon issues in Delhi:

  • Desilting of drains to improve water flow
  • Identification and clearance of waterlogging hotspots
  • Strengthening of sanitation and waste management systems
  • Maintenance of drainage infrastructure across zones

These steps are crucial to prevent flooding on roads and in residential areas during heavy rainfall.

Coordination Across Departments

The Commissioner emphasised the importance of inter-departmental coordination, directing various civic agencies to work in sync and provide regular progress updates.

Officials have been made accountable for ensuring smooth implementation at the ground level.

Accountability and Monitoring Mechanism

To avoid lapses seen in previous years, the MCD is focusing on:

  • Continuous monitoring of progress
  • Clear assignment of responsibilities
  • Ensuring efficiency and transparency in execution

The move aims to create a more responsive and accountable civic system.

Annual Monsoon Challenge for Delhi

Delhi faces frequent waterlogging and sanitation issues during monsoon, making pre-season planning critical. Measures like drain desilting and infrastructure maintenance are carried out every year to mitigate risks.

Towards a Smoother Monsoon Season

The tightened timelines and enhanced monitoring are expected to help the civic body minimise disruptions, improve drainage efficiency, and ensure public safety during the upcoming monsoon.
