India’s electronics manufacturing sector has rapidly emerged to become the country’s third-largest merchandise export category. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw shared this information, attributing the achievement to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
The Minister stated that India’s electronics manufacturing industry has now reached a record level of ₹13 lakh crore. Until a few years ago, the sector aimed merely to break into the country’s top 10 export categories; however, through sustained progress, it has advanced past the 9th, 7th, 5th, and 4th positions to secure the third spot.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, alongside Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, inaugurated Jabil’s state-of-the-art electronics manufacturing unit in Ranjangaon, Pune. Speaking on the occasion, he noted that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a key engine of global growth, and building the necessary technical infrastructure for it within India is of strategic importance.
He remarked that AI data centers are currently a rapidly expanding sector worldwide. The objective of Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Make in India’ policy is to ensure that the key electronic equipment and components used in these data centers are manufactured within India.
The Minister observed that while large-scale electronics manufacturing and exports from India were difficult to even imagine a few years ago, clear policies and visionary leadership have enabled the country to emerge as a trusted partner in the global manufacturing landscape.
Jabil’s new unit in Pune will manufacture cutting-edge products such as AI systems, 5G technology, advanced networking equipment, industrial energy systems, and consumer electronics. The plant will not only cater to domestic demand but also boost exports to global markets.
According to an official statement, the project will generate approximately 11,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. It will also play a pivotal role in integrating the local supply chain and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) into the global technology ecosystem. The government believes that the integrated development of electronic components, finished products, and local supply chains will yield broad economic and social benefits for the country, and further strengthen India’s position as a global electronics manufacturing hub.
