EAM Dr. S. Jaishankar Highlights the Importance of a Digital Corridor at CII India Mediterranean Business Conclave

Date:

Delhi â€“ At the CII India Mediterranean Business Conclave, External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar emphasized the potential and necessity of creating an integrated digital corridor between India and the Mediterranean region. Speaking at the event, Dr. Jaishankar underscored the increasing importance of secure and high-speed digital communication, equating it with the significance of traditional land routes and waterways.

Dr. Jaishankar highlighted India’s strategic position in contributing to the development of essential digital infrastructure. This includes advancements in undersea data cables, telecommunications networks, and a comprehensive digital payment ecosystem. His remarks come at a time when the global landscape is increasingly reliant on digital connectivity for economic and strategic purposes.

Addressing concerns arising from the ongoing conflict in West Asia, Dr. Jaishankar acknowledged the impact of disruptions in crucial shipping routes. These disruptions have not only heightened shipping costs but also necessitated the rerouting of trade flows, adding to regional uncertainties. Despite these challenges, Dr. Jaishankar viewed these developments as a call for “derisking” and a strengthened focus on diversifying and securing digital infrastructure.

Dr. Jaishankar further noted that as India, Europe, and the Middle East enhance their interactions, the need for robust connectivity will only grow. The proposed digital corridor aims to foster greater integration and resilience, ensuring that disruptions in physical trade routes do not hinder economic and digital exchanges.

The EAM’s statements reflect a forward-looking approach to international trade and digital infrastructure, emphasizing the critical role of technological advancements in bridging regions and mitigating risks associated with geopolitical instability.
