Delhi Intensifies Drive to Plant 70 Lakh Saplings; CM Rekha Gupta Urges Public Participation

Date:

The Delhi government is conducting a campaign to plant 70 lakh (7 million) saplings to increase the capital’s green cover and promote environmental conservation. As part of this initiative, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta planted a sapling in the Model Town area on Monday and urged citizens to actively participate in this mass movement.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that continuous tree-planting programs are being organised in Delhi under the mass plantation drive. She noted that the campaign was launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on July 7.

The Chief Minister mentioned that the government has connected people to the campaign through a special online portal. Citizens can schedule a time at their convenience to visit various locations and plant saplings. She emphasised that the government’s objective is to transform tree planting into a people’s movement, enabling as many people as possible to contribute to environmental conservation.

According to government officials, saplings are being planted in parks, educational institutions, roadside green belts, and other designated areas under the 70-lakh plantation drive. The campaign is receiving support from various government departments, local bodies, volunteers, and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs).

Earlier on Sunday, Kuljeet Singh Chahal, Vice Chairperson of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), planted a sapling in the Gole Market area under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam on Sunday’ (A Tree in Mother’s Name on Sunday) campaign. This campaign has now entered its 32nd consecutive week.

During the event, Kuljeet Singh Chahal met with local residents and RWA representatives to listen to their grievances and directed officials to resolve them promptly. He remarked that awareness regarding environmental conservation is steadily growing among the public through the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam on Sunday’ campaign, with citizens participating in large numbers.
